Many adults have crooked teeth that were not straightened with braces when they were children. And, due to the length of treatment and appearance of braces, they do not fix their teeth as adults. But, braces are not the only answer any more. Invisalign is a breakthrough smile you have always wanted without bands, brackets or wires. Dr. Merrett has been a long-time provider of Invisalign .

Invisalign invisibly straightens your teeth with a series of custom-molded aligners. By using a series of clear removable aligners, Invisalign straightens your teeth little by little. By simply changing the aligners about every two weeks, your teeth will move, week by week—until they have moved to the final position Dr. Norman has prescribed. Invisalign liners are comfortable to wear and removable so you can eat, drink, brush, and floss as usual. If you are interested in learning more about Invisalign, please contact us today for a consultation.

Periodontics

Dr. Merrett offers periodontal treatments as part of her general dental care. Periodontal treatment is the treatment of the gums to avoid or treat disease. Gum disease is a common problem in both children and adults and can be easily avoided with proper home cleaning and routine dental check-ups. However, there are many cases when this is not done properly and the result can be serious. There is a proven correlation between gum disease and heart problems. And, there are obvious threats to your teeth and mouth when periodontal care is not performed. A laser can be used to effectively treat early and moderate periodontal or gum diseases. With laser treatments, Dr. Merrett can selectively remove diseased tissues while leaving healthy tissue untouched. The laser also can sterilize the gum pockets and remove scaling in order to promote healing.

A denture is a removable dental appliance replacement for missing teeth and surrounding tissue. They are made to closely resemble your natural teeth and may even enhance your smile. There are two types of dentures - complete and partial dentures. Complete dentures are used when all of the teeth are missing, while partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain. A Partial denture not only fills in the spaces created by missing teeth, it prevents other teeth from shifting.

A Complete denture may be either "conventional" or "immediate." A conventional type is made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has healed, usually taking 4 to 6 weeks. During this time the patient will go without teeth. Immediate dentures are made in advance and immediately placed after the teeth are removed, thus preventing the patient from having to be without teeth during the healing process. Once the tissues shrink and heal, adjustments will have to be made.Dentures are very durable appliances and will last many years, but may have to be remade, repaired, or readjusted due to normal wear.Reasons for dentures:

Complete Denture - Loss of all teeth in an arch.

Partial Denture - Loss of several teeth in an arch.

Enhancing smile and facial tissues.

Improving chewing, speech, and digestion.

Root canal therapy is needed when the nerve of a tooth is affected by decay or infection. In order to save the tooth, the pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth), nerves, bacteria, and any decay are removed and the resulting space is filled with special, medicated, dental materials, which restore the tooth to its full function.Having a root canal done on a tooth is the treatment of choice to save a tooth that otherwise would die and have to be removed. Many patients believe that removing a tooth that has problems is the solution, but what is not realized is that extracting (pulling) a tooth will ultimately be more costly and cause significant problems for adjacent teeth.Root canal treatment is highly successful and usually lasts a lifetime, although on occasion, a tooth will have to be retreated due to new infections.Signs and symptoms for possible root canal therapy:An abscess (or pimple) on the gums.Sensitivity to hot and cold.Severe toothache pain.Sometimes no symptoms are present.Swelling and / or tenderness.Reasons for root canal therapy:

Decay has reached the tooth pulp (the living tissue inside the tooth).

Infection or abscess have developed inside the tooth or at the root tip.

Injury or trauma to the tooth

Many people suffer from TMJ and never know it. These people treat their symptoms with pain medications often prescribed by doctors and never address the cause of the symptoms:tempromandibular joint disorder. TMJ caused chronic and persistent head, neck or jaw pain. This can include migraine headaches. And, not all symptoms are localized to the head, neck and jaw. TMJ also can cause numbness in the arm, back pain and problems with the ears. We can Help with this.

Neuromuscular Dentistry

The occlusion (alignment of the teeth of the upper and lower jaws when brought together) is the foundation of dentistry. It is of key importance in the success of every major dental procedure.Occlusion is affected by three factors: teeth, muscles, and jaw joints. Achieving or restoring healthy relationships between the teeth, muscles, and joints can improve function, relieve pain, and enhance appearance. When these three factors are not in harmony, the result is TMJ or tempromandibular joint disorder.Neuromuscular dentistry treats temporomandibular joint disorderand the resulting variety of pain and ailments caused by this misalignment.

Dental Implants

Dental implants make it possible for cosmetic dentists like Dr. Merrett like  to create healthy, attractive smiles in an innovative way. Implants can replace one or more missing teeth, are another alternative to conventional bridges and dentures. Dental implants act and look like natural teeth. And, because they maintain bone mass, dental implants can help prevent additional tooth loss as well as the sunken facial appearance associated with missing teeth.

Each dental implant is composed of a biocompatible titanium screw and post topped by a crown, bridge or denture. These posts are surgically placed each implant into the jawbone where it replaces the natural tooth root. In a few months, the implant securely attaches to the bone, allowing it to withstand biting and chewing forces just like a healthy, natural tooth. The most common reasons for implant therapy include replacement of one or more teeth, support of non-removable “bridge’” to replace multiple teeth, or support of a removable full or partial denture.Once the implant has been completely integrated with the bone (usually 3-6 months), a post is attached to the implant. Then, Dr. Merrett can apply his cosmetic dentistry skills to create the permanent tooth replacement. The result can be a stronger, cosmetically enhanced smile. If you are interested in learning more
